Why Do I Keep Waking Up at 3 AM? How Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine May Help With Sleep

You fall asleep just fine, only to wake up a few hours later—wide awake and wondering why your brain or body has decided that 3 a.m. is the perfect time to start the day. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Lately, I’ve been seeing more patients at Mend Acupuncture who are struggling not necessarily with falling asleep, but with staying asleep. Some wake once and have trouble drifting back off, while others find themselves waking several times throughout the night. While occasional restless nights are normal, consistently disrupted sleep can affect your energy, mood, concentration, pain levels, and overall sense of well-being.

Not All Insomnia Looks the Same

One of the things I appreciate most about Chinese medicine is that we don’t approach every case of insomnia in exactly the same way. Two people may both say, “I can’t sleep,” but their experiences can be very different. One person may lie awake with a racing mind and worry. Another may fall asleep easily but wake around 2 or 3 a.m. feeling completely alert. Someone else may feel physically restless, wake frequently, experience night sweats, or notice that their sleep changes with their menstrual cycle.

When treating sleep concerns, I may ask about:

  • What time you fall asleep and wake during the night
  • Whether your mind feels active or your body feels restless
  • Stress and emotional health
  • Energy during the day
  • Digestion
  • Menstrual cycles and hormonal changes
  • Feeling hot or cold at night
  • Dreams or nightmares
  • Pain and muscle tension
  • Lifestyle, caffeine, and exercise

These details help me understand the larger pattern rather than focusing only on the symptom of poor sleep.

How Acupuncture May Support Better Sleep

Acupuncture is often used as part of a broader approach to insomnia and sleep disturbance. Treatment is individualized, but one of our goals is often to help the body shift out of a chronically activated, “on” state and into a state that is more conducive to rest. Many of my patients tell me they feel deeply relaxed during their acupuncture treatments—and some fall asleep right on the table. For someone dealing with persistent sleep problems, we may also address other factors that could be contributing, such as stress, pain, digestive issues, headaches, or hormonal changes.

Acupuncture + Herbal Medicine

For some patients, combining acupuncture with Chinese herbal medicine can be especially helpful for sleep concerns. Just as acupuncture treatments are individualized, herbal formulas are selected based on the person’s particular presentation. Someone whose sleep is disrupted by an active, busy mind may need a different approach than someone who wakes frequently feeling restless or depleted. Herbal medicine also provides support between acupuncture appointments. Rather than relying on acupuncture alone once a week, an appropriately selected herbal formula can become part of a more consistent treatment strategy. When appropriate, I may recommend using acupuncture and herbal medicine together and then reassessing as sleep begins to change.

Why Am I Always Waking Up at the Same Time?

People often ask me whether waking at a particular time—especially around 2, 3, or 4 a.m.—means something specific in Chinese medicine. Timing can provide useful information, but I don’t diagnose a sleep pattern based on the clock alone. I look at the whole picture: how easily you fall back asleep, what your mind and body feel like when you wake, your daytime energy, stress levels, digestion, hormonal patterns, and other symptoms. Those details give us much more information than the wake-up time by itself.

When Poor Sleep Becomes Your “Normal”

It’s easy to get used to poor sleep, especially if it has been happening for months or years. But if you’re regularly waking during the night, struggling to fall back asleep, or waking in the morning feeling like you never truly rested, it’s worth looking more closely at what may be contributing. At Mend Acupuncture, treatments are individualized to you. Acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, and practical lifestyle support can be used together to help support healthier sleep patterns and a calmer nervous system. If sleep has become one of the hardest parts of your day, we’d be happy to help you explore a different approach.
